Biography
Mohie Ismail studied philosophy at the Faculty of Arts, then joined the Acting Department at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts. He worked for a period in the National Theater and was one of the founders of the Experimental Hundred Chair Theater at the Czech Cultural Center in 1969.
Mohie Ismail began his artistic career at the National Theater, where he presented many plays, including: “The Black Night, Suleiman Al-Halabi, and The Caucasian Chalk Circle.” He quickly turned to television and participated in the series “Don’t Turn Out the Sun” in 1965. After that, his work continued in many series, the most notable of which was: “Night and Men”, “Sons in the Storm”, “Garden of Longing”, “A Sergeant Who Does Not Sleep”, “People of the Cave”, “The Private Detective” and “Cleopatra”.
As for his cinematic debut, it was in 1969 with the movie “The Well of Deprivation” opposite Souad Hosni’s Cinderella, followed by the movie “The Enemy Brothers,” which is considered his true artistic debut. After that, he presented many famous films, including: “Take Care of Zuzu,” “The Bullet Is Still in My Pocket,” “Mawlid Ya Dunya,” “The Execution of a High School Student,” “Has Someone Heard Something,” and “The Treasure.”
Mohie Ismail was famous for playing complex and difficult roles and characters going through complex problems. He focused his energy on embodying people’s psychological struggles, and he became a specialist in these roles until he was called “the pioneer of psychodrama.” He is also called "The Ceasar".
Mohie Ismail participated in world cinema with two films, “The Patrol” and “Heroes of Glory,” with international director Roberto Montero in 1971.
Mohie Ismail is known for his wide culture and his love for reading as well as writing. He published a group of books and novels that achieved wide circulation and were translated into more than one language, namely: “The Crazy One, A Traveler at God’s Door, The Surgeon of Souls, The Boy of the Age, The Complexities of the Human Soul.”
Mohy Ismail was selected as a member of the International Film Jury at the Alexandria Film Festival during its 35th session.
The film "Take Care of Zuzu", in which the artist Mohy Ismail participated, joined the list of the 100 best films in the memory of Egyptian cinema according to the critics' poll, where it ranked number 79.
Personal Life
The artist Mohy Ismail married only once in his life, to an Egyptian woman among his relatives, and he remained married to her for 10 years until she died in 2016 after she was infected with Hepatitis C, and he did not have any children from her. Mohi Ismail is the younger brother of director and screenwriter Fayek Ismail.
